Setting the stage

It was a real surprise to me a few years ago while watching the personal profiles and experiences with the contestants on the TV show "Biggest Loser". I literally remember one of the contestants talking about his pattern of eating doughnuts in the morning before going to work. He outlined his progression by saying I just started out a couple of times a week getting one doughnut. I ended up eating 3-6 doughnuts a day. I wasn't quite to the point where I was eating a half dozen doughnuts a day but I was stopping several times a week at that point and it all started with one doughnut once in awhile. I had not also reached the same weight problem this person had but in that moment it became perfectly clear to me what my future was if I continued the pattern. But even still with that realization I didn't take a course of action to correct the action but the seed was planted.

I've always had a curious and active personality. It ended up being a real surprise to me a few months ago when I realized the inactive life I had been leading for the last 10 years. And even for 5 years before that may activity leave was minimal. I think a lot was simply due to the type of job I have but also it was a process to get to the level of inactivity I end up at.

In my late teens I became very active in white water rafting and became a guide. That led me to begin rock climbing and I pursued that for 10 years or so climbing all over the eastern United States. My Career started to take off at that point and my life began to settle into a more docile lifestyle where I'd only get out on the water a few times a month. The climbing activity had stopped because as I gained weight and became weaker when I couldn't climb at the level I had accomplished in the past I was frustrated and just stopped...

More to come later.
